The 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election was the 15th quinquennial legislative assembly election held in the Indian state of Assam from March 27 to April 6 in three phases, to elect 126 MLAs to the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.
The contest is mostly between the BJP-led Mitrajot (group of friends) and the 10-party Mahajot or grand alliance headed by Congress. The counting of votes for the Assembly Elections in these states is currently on.
However, some of the constituencies have declared the results. It is noted that as of around 6 pm, Sunday, the BJP has spearheaded the NDA’s way well beyond the majority mark as the party has already won 55 seats and is leading in another 18 Assembly seats against the Congress-led Mahajot which has so far won 35 and is leading in 17 out of a total of 126 seats in Assam.
UPPL's Lawrence Islary secured the first win of Assam 2021 Elections. United People’s Party Liberal’s Lawrence Islary emerged victorious from the Kokrajhar (East) seat by a vote margin of 18,306. He defeated senior BPF leader and six-time MLA Pramila Rani Brahma in the Kokrajhar East constituency.
On the other side, Himanta Biswa Sarma wins Jalukbari constituency for the fifth consecutive time by a landslide margin of 1,01,911 votes. Sarma took to Twitter to announce his win and thanked the people of Jalukbari.
It is noted that Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President and self-proclaimed Chief Ministerial nominee of the grand alliance (Mahajot) Ripun Bora faced a defeat in Gohpur. Utpal Bora of BJP won against Ripun Bora with a margin of 14,118 votes.
Not to miss, Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi secured a historic win from Sivasagar. Gogoi has defeated his nearest opponent Surabhi Rajkonwari of BJP, with a margin of over 9,000 votes.
