Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi resigns; set to join BJP on Monday

Four-time Congress MLA from Mariani in Assam, Rupjyoti Kurmi tendered his resignation to the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly on June 18. He was accompanied by BJP MLAs Pijush Hazarika and Jayanta Malla Baruah who had also left the Congress and joined the BJP in 2015 with present Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He alleged that the Party High Command in Delhi & Guwahati gives priority to elderly leaders only and doesn't listen to its young leaders. He further added that Rahul Gandhi is unable to shoulder leadership and the party won't move forward with him at the helm.

Meanwhile, the Congress has formed a committee to take stock of the political situation and to boost the morale of the party workers in Mariani. Apparently, Kurmi was against the alliance with AIUDF and he felt it would harm party prospects in the recently concluded elections.

Speaking to journalists, Kurmi said, “I was assured of the post of Leader of Opposition in the assembly but was denied that later. I had applied for the post of the party’s state president, but didn’t get that. The party didn’t include my name in the list of members for public accounts committee (PAC) of state assembly. It seems the Congress doesn’t want leaders like me, who belong to a particular community, to rise.”
