Highlights of the First SPs Conference held in Kaziranga


Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Wednesday, June 9 had extensive discussions with the DGP of Assam and the SPs of all 33 districts of Assam Police on policing and making Assam rank among the best in internal Security. They were accompanied by Agriculture Minister of Assam, Atul Bora, the Health Minister of Assam, Keshab Mahanta and the Finance Minister of Assam Ajanta Neog.

Major takeaways from the conference include the following;

  • The Conference focused on different ways of modernizing the Police Force in the wake of new forms of crimes being noticed by Police.

  • A decision has been taken that a 10-Professional Commando Battalion will be formed to sternly deal with emerging crimes in the state. The Battalion will be stationed at critical points like certain “sensitive” locations in the Assam-Nagaland border, Tinsukia and BTR districts. 

  • Construction of 7 forensic labs to help modernize and strengthen Assam Police and better deal with drug-related crimes.

  • All Police Officials and Battalion have been “gifted” a mandatory one month holiday to visit their family, without adjusting it to the EOL, except for the ones who live with their families in the Police quarter itself. A separate SOP will be issued regarding this. 

  • A yearly health check-up has been granted to all Police Officials in Assam.

  • Two shifts duty has been introduced in all Police Stations to reduce the workload on police personnel.

  • Additional 23,000 Civil Police Personnel and 12,000 Commando Police Personnel will be added to the system.

  • Taking into consideration the welfare of police personnel, the decision was taken that police quarters will be constructed.

  • Recruitment rules for appointment into police forces will be modified to bring in more professionally qualified and skilled manpower into the system.

Prior to the start of the conference, CM Sarma also received Guard of Honour from an Assam Police contingent.

The Chief Minister highly praised and commended Assam Police for their recently taken rapid steps in preventing many criminal activities such as Drugs Peddlers, Illegal Cattle Smugglers and also directed them to take stern steps towards such criminal activities.

Later in the press conference, the Chief Minister added that there will be a SPs conference every six months from now on. The next conference shall be held at Duliajan around November-December this year. 

He also talked about the first DC Conference which will be held between 15 Aug and 30 Aug, in Diphu. Similar to the SPs conference, DCs Conference will also be held every six months. The Chief Minister has further assured that he will meet the DCs and SPs of all 33 districts of Assam, every six months at Guwahati, to have an organised interaction with them and resolve various issues.
