5th June is celebrated as World Environment Day. This year people from all around the world planted trees to heal mother nature from deforestation and climate change. However, a young man from a village named Kandachira in Kerala's Kollam district had other plans: they planted cannabis by the roadside.
Kollam Excise Special Squad Circle Inspector I Noushad procured a tip from an eyewitness and on obtaining the tip a team led by Kollam Excise Special Squad Sub Inspector T Rajeev found the saplings, 60 cm and 30 cm long respectively, from the road between Kurishadi junction in Kandachira and the bypass. Inspector Noushad was also told that the accused also supervised others to do the same. On receiving a similar tip they rushed to the Mangad bypass bridge and conducted a search operation there; however, cannabis plants were destroyed before their arrival but there were indications that cannabis was planted there. Later in a statement, the Excise Department said "We also got information that the plants were maintained by a resident of Kandachira who was previously involved in a ganja case."
Assistant Excise Commissioner B Suresh assured that the accused will be caught soon.
He further added that "We think that the ganja lobby is trying new methods since there is a lockdown and they cannot travel to other states to smuggle in ganja from there."
Earlier in April Excise Department and Customs in Kochi jointly conducted an operation and arrested four persons from a luxury hotel in the city on Saturday night for possessing drugs MDMA and ganja.
