Licypriya Kangujam is a name many might have come across on Twitter. The nine-year-old girl shot to fame claiming to be a climate activist and has more than 140k followers on Twitter. However, according to several media reports, Licypriya has been faking her achievements.
Licypriya’s father, Kanarjit Kangujam also known as KK Singh was arrested by a joint team of the Delhi and Manipur Police on charges of forgery based on a complaint by a student from Nepal named Prajesh Kanhal. Kanhal was allegedly duped by Kanarjit into paying money to his organisation, International Youth Committee. Kanarjit will also be investigated for another case as per the police.
In April 2016, Kanarjit was labelled an “absconder” by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal East in a 2015 case for cheating and other offences. Kanarjit and his family have been living in an apartment in New Delhi since 2016.
As per the complaint lodged by Prajesh Kanhal in February 2020, Kanarjit’s International Youth Committee in 2018 had taken 30,000 rupees from him for participation in an international conference called ‘Europe Exchange Youth Programme’. The conference was first postponed to 2019 and then never took place. Kanhal’s requests for refund were repeatedly ignored. The complaint suggests that more than 80 such individuals from different countries have been duped by Kanarjit’s IYC.
As far as Licypriya is concerned, in April 2019, her father Kanarjit claimed that she had been “selected” to address the United Nations in the sixth session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland. However, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction refuted the claim and informed that Licypriya was not an official speaker at the Global Platform 2019.
