Assam Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a meeting with the officials of the Public Health Engineering Department, carried out a detailed analysis of the Central Government’s flagship program, 'Jal Jeevan Mission'. The meeting held at his office conference room at Janata Bhawan on 28th May, Friday, emphasized assuring the sustainability of the water supply schemes which are being executed under the mission.
The Jal Jeevan Mission is aimed at providing safe and ample drinking water through individual household tap connections to all households in rural India by 2024. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of pipes laid for water supply by the department and deemed it to be significant for the sustainability of the mission, instructed to reanalyze the implementation framework of PHED schemes and formulate a maintenance policy determining the type of items to be used, implementation strategy and operational mechanism for the assets to be created under the Mission.
Chief Minister mentioned that the overground water channels employed for piped water supply schemes keep getting changed leading to the dysfunction of many schemes and suggested conducting a scientific study before implementation of schemes apart from doing quality control study.
Chief Minister advised immediate recruitment of the workforce essential for the success of the Mission other than adopting ingenious ways which lead to sustainable PHED schemes. He also directed to convene zonal delegations with contractors to stimulate the rapid implementation of schemes.
The meeting was attended by PHED and P&RD Minister, Ranjeet Kumar Dass; Additional Chief Secretary, S Abbasi; Principal Secretary to CM, Samir Kumar Sinha; Commissioner & Secretary PHED, Akashdeep and other senior officials.
