The results of the 15th Assembly Elections have been declared and on May 10, Sunday, Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Assam. While elections come and go, governments form and fall, most of the elected representatives continue to see a rise invtheir assets, and the election budget of parties grows manifold every year. Here is a look at the financial background of the leaders who have been voted to power in Assam this year.
According to the latest report by Association for Democratic Reforms, 67% of all the elected candidates are Crorepatis - basically someone whose net worth is greater than one crore (ten million) rupees, which is around 30 times more than an average Indian's monthly wage of Rs 32,800.
The Average assets of the Winning Candidates is Rs 4.59 Crores. Among the major parties, 43 (72%) out of 60 from BJP, 21 (72%) out of 29 from INC, 3 (75%) out of 4 from Bodoland Peoples Front, 8 (89%) out of 9 from AGP and 8 (50%) out of 16 from AIUDF winning candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.
Among them, AIUDF candidate from Hojai, Siraj Uddin Ajmal tops the list with total asset of around 111 crore, followed by Siddeque Ahmed (Rs 26 Crore+), INC candidate from Karimganj South and Naba Kumar Doley (Rs 25 Crore+), BJP candidate from Dhakuakhana (ST). The newly elected Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma has total assets worth around Rs 17 Crore+
Among major parties, the average assets per winning candidates for 60 BJP winning candidates is Rs 3.83 Crores, 29 INC winning candidates is Rs 4.87 crores, 16 AIUDF winning candidates are Rs 10.91 crores, and 9 AGP winning candidates have average assets worth Rs 2.20 Crores.
Overall, average assets of re-elected MLAs in 2021 is an enormous Rs 4.03 crores.
Naba Kumar Doley (BJP) of Dhakuakhana constituency had a 250% increase in Asset which equals to Rs 18 Crore+ in between the 2016 Assembly Elections and the 2021 Assembly Elections.
Nijam Uddin Choudhury (AIUDF) of Algapur constituency had a ginormous 410% increase in Asset which equals to Rs 11 Crore+ in between the 2016 Assembly Elections and the 2021 Assembly Elections.
The new Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma (BJP) of Jalukbari had a 171% increase in Asset which equals to Rs 10 Crore+ in between the 2016 Assembly Elections and the 2021 Assembly Elections.
Overall, the average growth in assets of re-elected MLAs from 2016 to 2021 is a massive Rs 1.98 crore i.e. by 97%.
